Professor Simon Mitchell
MB ChB, PhD, DipDHM, DipOccMed (ANZCA), FUHM, FANZCA
New Zealand anaesthesiologist and internationally recognised expert in diving and hyperbaric medicine. He is Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology at the University of Auckland and a consultant at Auckland City Hospital, where he provides on-call support for diving and hyperbaric emergencies.
He has co-authored the hyperbaric and diving medicine chapters in the last four editions of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine and has published over 170 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. Professor Mitchell is Editor-in-Chief of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine and has twice served as Vice President of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, receiving the UHMS Behnke Award in 2010.
In addition to his academic work, Professor Mitchell has extensive operational diving experience and has participated in landmark deep wreck and cave exploration projects, including the Pearse Resurgence expeditions in New Zealand.
Dr James Caruso
MD
Chief Medical Examiner and Coroner for the City and County of Denver, Colorado, and a board-certified forensic pathologist with extensive experience in medicolegal death investigation and operational medicine.
He previously served for nearly three decades in the United States Navy Medical Corps, including roles as a Diving Medical Officer and senior forensic pathologist within the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System. His work sits at the intersection of forensic pathology, diving medicine, and operational risk.
Dr Caruso has contributed widely to education and professional practice in forensic and diving-related fatalities and currently leads one of the United States’ accredited medical examiner offices.

Advance Hyperbaric Nursing Practice in Asia : Safety, Competency and Clinical Excellence
Speaker: Ms Bebe Brown
Ms. Bebe Brown is an experienced hyperbaric nursing specialist and Associate Nurse Unit Manager in the Department of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine at Royal Hobart Hospital, Tasmania, Australia. She has provided advanced clinical care and coordination in one of Australia’s established hyperbaric medicine units, contributing to both inpatient treatment and operational aspects of chamber care.
Ms. Brown’s work extends beyond clinical duties into research and multidisciplinary collaboration. She has been involved in clinical research activities at the Royal Hobart Hospital site for multi-centre hyperbaric trials, including assisting with recruitment, site data entry, and follow-up for the Hyperbaric Oxygen for Lower Limb Trauma (HOLLT) randomised clinical trial published in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine.
In addition to her clinical and research roles, Ms. Brown is recognised within the nursing community for her dedication and compassionate care, which has been highlighted by local professional organisations and patient commendations.

Raising Regional Hyperbaric Facility Safety, Reliability and Engineering Competency Standards
Speaker: Mr Francois Burman
Pr. Eng, IntPE (SA), BSc Eng (Mech), MSc (MedSc), MSAIME, FSAIW
Mr Francois Burman is Vice President of Safety Services at Divers Alert Network (DAN). A Professional Engineer by training, he has extensive expertise in diving safety, risk management, and hyperbaric facility systems.
Mr Burman has made significant contributions to the development of safety frameworks within diving and hyperbaric operations, including leading initiatives in hazard identification, risk assessment, and operational safety programmes across DAN’s global network. His work spans both engineering and operational domains, with a focus on improving safety standards in diving activities and recompression facilities.
He has authored and contributed to numerous publications on hyperbaric systems, chamber operations, and safety engineering, and has played a key role in the development of risk assessment guides for hyperbaric facilities. His contributions to the field have been recognised with professional honours, including the UHMS Paul Sheffield Award.
