Medical Examiner of Divers (MED) is a recognized Level 1 competency as described by the standards of European Diving Technology Committee (EDTC) together with the European Committee for Hyperbaric Medicine (ECHM) and endorsed by the Diving Medical Advisory Committee (DMAC)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

  1. What is a Medical Examiner of Divers?
    • Medical Examiner of Divers (MED) is a recognized Level 1 competency as described by the standards of European Diving Technology Committee (EDTC) together with the European Committee for Hyperbaric Medicine (ECHM) and endorsed by the Diving Medical Advisory Committee (DMAC).
    • MED are able to perform the fitness-to-dive assessment of working or recreational divers and compressed air workers, EXCEPT the resume diving assessment after major decompression incidents.
  1. How long does the certification last?
      • 3 years
  1. How can I get myself listed in the registry of AHDMA?
    • Candidate MUST be a registered Medical Practitioner of good standing in their respective country of practice.
    • Registered Member of AHDMA
    • Completed and passed MED course or any qualification as equivalent.
  1. Who manages the registry?
    • The registry is managed by the board of the association and all registry enlistment will be monitored and consented prior.
    • In case of a question or do not intend to be listed in the registry, enquiries can be forwarded to the board of association via asianhyperbaric@gmail.com with email subject title MED List.
  1. What are the documents required for manual submission to the board of association to be listed in the registry?
  1. How long does it take to process manual submissions?
    • All manual submissions reviewed by Diving Medical Registry will not exceed 30 days after submission if all requirements are fulfilled.
  1. Do I have to pay for my manual submission?
    • No fee is required at the moment.
  1. Who should use the registry?
    • Divers and compressed air workers who need a fitness-to-dive assessment can find their doctor according to the geographical location and according to the doctors’ competency level.
    • Employers that need assessment for fitness-to-dive for their employees or need a diving medical advisor for their safety management, risk assessment or emergency planning and readiness. They can find a diving medicine physician of a higher level (level 2) competence to assist in screening, diagnosing and treatment planning.

AHDMA recognises competence levels as described by the standards of the European Diving Technology Committee (EDTC) together with the European Committee for Hyperbaric Medicine (ECHM) and endorsed by the Diving Medical Advisory Committee (DMAC). These “Educational and Training Standards for Physicians in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine” define the following levels of competence:
    • This “Medical Examiner of Diver Course” is DMAC Level 1 equivalent course
    • These Educational and Training Standards for Physicians in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine define the following levels of competency:
      • Level 1 – Medical Examiner of Divers (MED)
      • Level 2D – Diving Medicine Physician (DMP)
  1. Do I have to re-certify myself once I am registered?
    • Competency cannot last forever without continuous professional development and updates. Therefore, according to the standards of EDTC/ECHM a re-certification is due every 3 years.
    • Re-certification will require:
  1. AHDMA is a non-government organization which provides training in Medical Examiner of Divers. However, clinical decisions and actions is wholly solely the responsibility of the individual Medical Examiner.
